It’s no secret that all kids love to be treated to yummy treats, and puppies are no exception in this regard. However, treats for children and puppies carry a completely different functional load. Of course, four-legged babies are also pleased to feel loved, but to a greater extent, treats are needed for socialization and training, as well as the development of jaw muscles and massaging the gums. The latter is especially true during the period of eruption of permanent teeth – from 3 to 6 months.
Let’s talk about what treats can be given to puppies for certain purposes, what owners most often use and what it is better to refuse.
Parsing treats
Let’s designate the main parameters that treats for puppies should meet:
Treats should be useful! This immediately cuts off sweets, confectionery, all kinds of sausages, sausages and Japanese rollsgar, salt, spices, glutamates, preservatives, starch, wheat, an abundance of obscure fats and oils – can not be called useful for a tailed child.
Treats must be safe! They should not break into sharp pieces that can injure the gums or esophagus. Therefore, we will classify the bones as dangerous – absolutely all boiled, especially the tubular bones of a bird. Of course, beef moss is a classic for dogs, but they are too tough for a puppy. The baby will struggle to chew on your “gift” – and risk spoiling the bite. Better to refrain.
Berries and fruits with stones can also be dangerous, including olives – a miniature puppy, having caught a treat, can choke on an unfortunate accident, or the bones will cause intestinal obstruction – such cases are not uncommon in veterinary practice.
Treats should be welcome! Of course, everything is individual here. And perhaps pieces of carrot, apple or cucumber will inspire some puppy to study and obedience. But let’s be honest: how can you demand from a pet not to pick up “byaka” on the ground, motivating with such a weak reward? Yes, and it will not work with their help to keep the puppy busy for a long time when “teeth itch” – juicy vegetables and fruits are eaten too quickly.
For dogs as predators, the scent of prey is very important, so the ideal treat should be based on animal products. In principle, pieces of boiled meat in this regard can be suitable, as well as home-made goodies from an oven-baked liver. But there are a few downsides here:
- All this must be bought and prepared in advance (especially for the pet);
- Such delicacies are not stored for a long time (especially in the summer in the heat);
- They get their hands dirty (not such a problem, but still a nuance);
- It is impossible to calculate the calories in each serving.
The latter is very important, because experts recommend giving treats to dogs in a proportion of no more than 15% of the total diet, and if more, then they should be considered food and reduce the amount of daily feeding.
Can you give store bought treats to a puppy?

Ready-made treats for animals can be very different – as well as products for people. You need to understand that if dry dog food has at least some GOST (for proteins, fats, moisture), then goodies are “terra incognita”, where you enter at your own peril and risk. Pet stores have a lot of products in the form of cookies, seeds, sweets, which contain sugar, flour, starch, dyes and thickeners and… A few flavor enhancers of protein origin. Puppies should not be given these treats.
But what is really worth paying attention to is natural meat by-products, which are properly processed and sold ready-to-eat in factory packaging. Puppies love them! This is a healthy and convenient treat that you can use at home or take with you for a walk. True, among such treats there are more and less high-quality ones – it all depends on the method of their production.
Freeze-dried and dried treats are not the same
Today you can buy both types of delicacies, but let’s say right away that sublimated ones are more valuable and healthy. They cost a little more than ordinary dried ones, but they are also produced using a different technology – like food supplies for astronauts. If during normal drying the raw material is heated, blown, cooled and packaged, then with freeze-drying, it is first instantly frozen, then blown, and only then they begin to dry in an airless chamber at a temperature not exceeding 55 degrees.
This is how the sublimated Blitz delicacies are produced. All this process takes a lot of time and requires special equipment, but it turns out an ideal delicacy: it has all the advantages of a dry product (does not deteriorate during indoor storage, does not stain hands, weighs little) and at the same time retains 95% of the beneficial substances, as well as the fibrous structure of the meatraw materials. The sublimated delicacies will not crumble in their pockets and will not be lying forgotten on the carpet – they really like puppies, and they are easy to dose (the calorie content is indicated on the factory packaging).
Assortment Blitz: What goodies can puppies?
Almost any – it all depends on the size of your pet and the goals of treats. Larger and fibrous delicacies that you can’t quickly eat, for example, a bull root, a beef tail and esophagus are ideal when teething: they distract the puppy, reduce unpleasant sensations and easily win your boots and wires.
Smaller goodies – the cut beef light or pieces of the scar – are indispensable in training and early socialization of the puppy. They contain useful elastin and collagen, and the scar is also recommended for puppies with problematic digestion. Blitz sublimated goodies can be given to puppies as an additional source of protein and nutrients, outside the attachment to the promotion. And let you not mislead the “small” packaging: a high-quality 30 gram sublimat is, for example, 150 grams of fresh meat product.
